Dr. Velma R. Harper

Veterinarian & Founder

I arrived in Guam, fresh from Ohio in 1966. My parents were both educators, my father an elementary school principal and my mother the Director of Special Education. As for me, I was a young girl ready, willing and able to begin adopting as many stray dogs and cats that I could get my hands on. My mother never said no, just shook her head. My father was a very good handyman and made each of my pets their own house.

By the 6th grade I had 17 dogs and 13 cats. I was very fortunate to have loving and supporting parents. I announced to them, that at age 10 that I wanted to become a veterinarian and here I am today!

I was honored to receive full academic scholarship for my entire education, and received my Bachelors of Science from the University of Southern California and my DVM from the University of the Philippines. I worked with Dr. Estacio in Pasadena, California for one year after graduating. We traveled around Southern California doing orthopedic surgeries.

I returned to Guam and was an associate professor at the University of Guam and was their Extension Veterinarian. One year later I became an associate veterinarian with Dr. Eugene Clothier at Marianas Veterinary Hospital. During this time I opened Harper Valley Boarding and Quarantine Kennels. One year later my parents funded the opening of my own veterinary hospital!

I have been practicing in Ohio for the last 9 years and during this time my son, Seve Susuico has taken over the reins of Harper Valley Kennels and made it into what it is today. We are CCF compliant, USDA certified as intermediate animal handlers. Our renovated kennels are totally enclosed and fully air conditioned. Harper Valley Kennels is a family business.
